about

This is my first rap song, released around 1990.

lyrics

It all started out the year of ’88
The first time I began to appreciate
Hip-hop music and its distinct style
Here I was captivated like a young child
Who had discovered and was playing with a new toy
In other words, rap was simply something I enjoyed
Don’t know why, but it floated my boat
Monotonous rhythm, music with one note
Records being scratched, people wearing big chains
Jumpin’ round the stage like they were insane
Lookin’ like they picked their clothes out in the dark
You know, things you think rappers have as a trademark
Rap, I love it, that was clearly defined
But makin’ my own had never crossed my mind
Like sponges soak up water, I was takin’ it in
Listenin’ to rhymes other people had written, yeah
That was ’88, but soon ’89 came
School started up, but things stayed the same
Until second semester when we were all asked
To memorize poetry for English class
Yes, that was boring and so was reciting it
But I got a big kick out of rewriting it
Makin’ it funny, making classmates laugh
Slowly evolving into what we call rap
I think you understand, this was setting the stage
Buildin’ an interest which would turn the page
Movin’ to a level which was much much higher
What used to be a spark had become a fire
Writin’ my own rhymes 24-7
The engine to my rap mobile was always revvin’
Practicing the rhythm, getting everything right
Workin’ through the problems ’til I saw the light
So there is it summarized in 32 lines
How I got interested in writing rhymes
All of the story told short and sweet
And now we’ll call this rhyme finished and complete
