I grew up trying to understand my family. So many things didn’t add up. My memories from France. Unexplained friction between family members. A shroud of darkness over my childhood home. In 2016, a situation shook my world like never before and brought me face to face with the underlying forces which had shackled my family for generations. I had a glimpse beneath the lid of Pandora’s box and I was ostracized from my family of origin for making the discovery.

It would be an understatement to say that Over This House is my most personal and emotional project to date. I wrote and recorded these songs because I desperately needed a way out. Music was the pulse which kept a failing heart alive and the only voice I had in the face of silencing. The title of Over This House seemed to best describe my struggle as the leader and protector of our home. I found myself in the midst of a vicious battle between truth and lies - an internal and external war between a holy light and a darkness which threatened to destroy everything precious to me. There were moments when I wondered if my life even mattered.

For two years, I prayed and journaled in an attempt to navigate the maze of emotions I was feeling. Rejection. Numbness. Anger. Disbelief. Hopelessness. Fear. The enemy was determined to rip the life from my soul. However, God had other plans. Friends listened and encouraged me when I needed it the most. God picked me up in my darkest moments and reminded me that I am forever His child.

The first several songs for Over This House were birthed in November 2018 in a quiet cabin tucked away in the secluded woods of Hocking Hills, Ohio. After a two-year creative drought, I found myself scrambling to capture an onslaught of melodies and lyrics. With a Martin acoustic strapped around my neck, I frantically typed lyrics into my laptop while my wife Crystal watched a Hallmark movie and cheered me on. I knew my heart was finally on the road to healing.

This is my story...a story of rejection, abuse and lies...and a story of grace, redemption and forgiveness. What was planned to bring me harm has only led me to the Father’s arms and I now rest deeper and more confidently in the acceptance of the One who created me and knows me through and through. In the end, God’s infinite love conquers all.
